Football

People throughout Medieval Europe played an early form of soccer, or football as Europeans call it. Often two villages played against one another with dozens or even hundreds of people taking part on each side. Several Medieval writers complained that the game frequently turned into a free-for-all.

Football is a game in which young men propel a huge ball, not by throwing it, but by striking and rolling it along, and not with their hands but with their feet. The game itself is bad enough--it is more common, undignified and generally worthless than any other. What is worse is that the game seldom ends without some accident-some loss or damage to the players themselves.
