New Order of The Garter

England, 1349

Competition is high among leading knights in the kingdom for invitations from King Edward to join his new Order of the Garter. Just 25 knights and the king are eligible for membership of the new elite order, which meets for the first time on St George's Day. The idea for the order reputedly came after the king,in a much-publicised moment of chivalry, rescued one of the countess of Salisbury's garters at a dance, rebuking onlookers with Honi soit qui mal y pense - Shame on whomever thinks this shameful.
